The Defenseless (Part 1 of 2)…

Note from Carl Chinn: The following (and next week’s follow up) is submitted by an FBSN member who wishes to remain anonymous.

“How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82:2-4

On 2-28-2022 in Sacramento CA, at The Church in Sacramento, 39 year-old David Mora Rojas killed 9 year-old Samarah, 10 year-old Samantha, 13 year-old Samia, and 59 year-old Nathaniel Kong during a court ordered visit at the church. The three girls were the killers’ biological daughters, Nathaniel a leader in the church, supervising the visit. This killer had a restraining order in place that kept him a safe distance from the girls except for 4 hours a week when he could exercise his parental rights and have mandatory visits with the girls. There was known history, these girls had experienced his violence before. The courts had evidence of violence or there would be no order of protection. Still, his ‘parental rights’ took priority over these precious lives.

As a member of FBSN’s Deadly Force Incident Study group, every one of these attacks strike a nerve. Every life lost on faith-based property, ground that should be a refuge, holy to those enjoying religious freedom, is atrocious. This one haunts me. This one not only highlights the evil within the soul of a killer but the apathy or foolishness of a legal system that is failing our children.

The FBSN is a membership of those called to protect, able to look past the adult sob story or the hollow redemption demonstration and see the danger to ones such as these. The self-serving can cause well-meaning multitudes to miss the real harvest. As faith-based security professionals we are not only called to protect these precious ones, but to defend their spiritual growth.

“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Think About it:

As these little ones live out their faith, the looming presence of their abuser is on them. Unfit parents are often granted access into the child’s life for important events in addition to court ordered visits. Many of these events take place in houses of worship. As we work to keep our churches safe, do not overlook these children. They are on the front lines of a battle few of us can grasp.
