Giveups and Gottaways

Many churches “take sides” in cultural issues. One of which is the immigration issue.

I recently had the opportunity to tour the border in Arizona with a recently retired Border Patrol Deputy Sector Chief. Our three-person team was rounded out with a Police Chief who has lived there his whole life.

Any reasonable conversation regarding border control must acknowledge there are good people coming across seeking the better life in America.

Any reasonable conversation must also acknowledge that some are coming across for criminal reasons.

The Chief summed it up well. The better the border is controlled, the less crime they experience in their border city. Their city is a glimpse into the problems across our nation.

Border Patrol has agency slang (certainly not popular in Washington DC) that classifies those coming across into two groups; “Giveups and Gottaways.”

I watched a small group of 16 Giveups get processed by a Patrol Agent. They are first given a Covid Mask, then asked for documentation (practically none have any). Their information is written down, and the agent calls for a bus to come take them to the holding facility where they are fed, clothed and medicated.

While many of the Giveups are family units, an increasing number of the younger family members are also MS-13 gang members (their own parents often don’t even know).

Now let’s consider the Gottaways. Each morning agents count tracks in the sand where pedestrian traffic is found where no Giveups were processed the preceding day. Camera footage and other electronic devices are considered as well. Though nobody in upper echelon, or certainly in Washington DC, want to have those numbers, the boots on the ground watch it like a dashboard gauge.

While the ratio of Giveups to Gottaways varies with seasons and current cultural issues, it can be as high as 50 / 50 (or worse). What is sobering to ponder is the intent of the Gottaways. They know how to avoid discovery and are doing it purposely.

Think About it

Accurate reporting is difficult to discover. There could be as many as 3 million coming across the southern border per year. In 2020, Border Patrol records indicated 1.7 million apprehensions (that is primarily “Giveups” processed with some caught in their attempt to be a Gottaway).

Do you think some dangerous ones might be coming across?
