One difference between real life and the Hollywood version occurred to me as my wife and I watched a movie recently. As the plot thickened and the characters narrowly got through their life-changing event, there was no scriptural references, no biblical encouragements, no historical references of spiritual values that served as guideposts or buoys of navigation. While not every household or people group is scripture centric, it seems Hollywood might occasionally recognize how important it is to many. With modern secular movies however, I don’t recall that being part of any storyline. When I think back through our lifetime of experiences, those toughest times include monuments of scriptural reference. David was destined; both trained and chosen, to be a warrior, then king. He chose strong men to lead his warriors. He chose especially strong men to protect him, an executive protection detail. There was one truly remarkable man selected as head of that detail. I Chronicles 11: 4-9 tells of David’s first order of business; retaking the city of Jerusalem, held by the Jebusites for 350 years. As a result of leading troops in that successful action, Joab was appointed Commander in Chief of David’s developing army. Then the 10th through the 47th verses list those David chose as warrior leaders. 50 men were listed by name, plus references to the sons of Hashem the Gizonite. Of all those mentioned, only the exploits of 4 were recorded. One of those four, Benaiah, was appointed to oversee David’s bodyguards. What order of man must you be to be chosen as…
On Friday 11/12/21, I finally got to see our first Great Grandchild. Little Stella is named after my Great Grandmother. As I looked into her eyes I thought of Nehemiah 4:14 (NIV); After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” When life’s battles are intense, God uses the eyes of a child to inspire warriors to stand up, put their hands on their swords and return to battle. Think About it Nehemiah had been called to a specific work. So have you. Are you serving in what God called you to? If not, get out of it. It won’t end well for you if you are slaving away…
