09 May: Who Built Your Stairs?

Codes are written in the blood of experience. When buildings are built, codes provide specific guidelines. Consider the International Building Code (IBC) regarding stairs. The IBC specifies the height of all risers (the vertical component between treads) in a staircase, to not be more than 7 ¾ inches in height. It further specifies any variation of riser heights within a flight of stairs should not be more than ⅜ inch. Regarding the treads, the depth is regulated to be no less than 11 inches (with other specifications regarding the nosing dimension, bevel and curve radius). The tolerance for variation of tread depths within a flight of stairs is also limited to no more than ⅜ inch. Why are the height and depth of each step regulated regarding variation? Rhythm. On page 217 of his book, LA Justice, Robert Vernon wrote, “when wrong is defended, when right is attacked, the pillars of social structure crumble and fall.” This new cancel craze is not in the least bit about human rights and stopping any form of oppression. It is a growing crusade supporting that which is wrong and opposed to that which is right. Feel like it is wearing you out? It is. That’s the goal. Law-enforcement officers, soldiers, preachers, teachers, trainers and others are being monitored for every single word or deed as critics look for a gotcha. Good is scrutinized and demonized. Bad is defended. Those who have stepped forward to dedicate themselves to a life of protection service are fighting not only against deeds of deviancy, but against those bent on protecting the doers of those evil deeds.
