25 Oct: Having a healthy life perspective helps you deal with those who don’t

This last week of October is a time of somber reflection for my brothers and I. Dad died October 28th, 2005; Mom on November 1st, 2019. An important date in our home long before their passing was always October 24th. Dad was on the USS Princeton (CVL-23) on October 24th, 1944 when a Japanese bomb struck a fatal blow and the ship sank. That day had a lot to do with the culture in our home. Dad told interesting stories about his experiences on that battle-scarred aircraft carrier. By 1944, the Princeton had been involved in many of the biggest battles of the war. Towards the end, her men were tired. They had seen too much death and been gone from home too long. Weariness spawned mistrust and unrest. It seemed the Navy was confused. They would be going full speed north one week, just to turn around and head…

18 Oct: What is the title of your children’s stories

My dad could be an ornery kid. He and his brother broke the windows out of the family chicken house. Once, he and friends turned over an outhouse. Another time they twisted the tail off a calf by swinging on it. That was reality from the farm in the 1920’s and 30’s. Another reality was his Dad’s razor strap. I too kept my rebellion throttled to survive. Deana and I have five children. Each had some measure of orneriness. Some more than others, but they all knew there were consequences. They throttled their rebellion to survive. Dad loved his parents; I loved mine and our kids love us. Neither Grandpa, nor Dad, nor…

10 Oct: COULD YOU? WOULD YOU?

The Midland City (Alabama) Assembly of God Church had more space than needed; renting a building to the Destiny Church congregation. 66-year-old Charles (Chuck) Poland Jr. drove a school bus on a route that required him to turn around on the road to the two churches. Next to the churches was property owned by a deranged menace to all neighbors. But Chuck Poland had befriended him. The man had developed a turnaround on his place for Chuck’s bus. On the morning of January 29th, 2013 Chuck gave him Jelly and eggs. That same afternoon, with over 20 kids on his bus, Chuck used the turned around the man had provided. But the man boarded the bus and handed Chuck a note demanding he turn over two young kids to him. Emphasizing his seriousness, he fired a shot through the bus roof. Chuck immediately defended his kids. Recognizing the danger, he…
